The Day the Music Died

Today marks the 50th anniversary of the Day the Music Died. On February 3rd, 1959, Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and the Big Bopper JP Richardson, tragically died in a plane crash after playing a show at the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake, Iowa.

I heard about this on the way to work this morning, the radio show hosts were discussing the event and what had taken place.

I have actually been to the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake and agreed with the morning show host when he stated that the decor of the building hasn't changed since Buddy Holly had been there. Another fact about the location is that the Surf Ballroom sits near the intersection of Buddy Holly Plaza and North Shore Drive in Clear Lake. I never realized that is why the street is named that until today.

To remember these artists is important, but today cannot be as Don Maclean says, the day the music died. These gentlemen have been inspirations for many musicians and their legacy will remain!

Let's have a moment of silence to remember those passing before us.
